Join the author as she takes a vacation from being a 'gaijin' in Japan to enjoy a visit as a 'falang' in rural Thailand. Diane and her Japanese friend, Naomi, have adventures in Thailand that are not the usual fare. Laugh as Naomi sends an entire train car full of people into an uproar with one small action. Follow along as Diane tells a monk just what he can do with his unwanted advances. Meet Joe and Mr. Asparagus at the Youth Hostel from Hell. Watch as Diane and Naomi get ripped off, not once, but twice - first by a scam in Bangkok and later a tourist trap in Chiang Mai. Be amazed as they are nearly taken in by the ruse of a couple of teenage sharks looking for sponsors for their 'scholarships.' Catch their carefree spirit as they travel by train, bus and plane, on a serendipitous trip with no advanced room reservations or set itinerary.

I've never been a traveler so I like to "armchair" travel. This was quite an interesting trip for me, having known nothing about the Thai culture before now. Well, I couldn't put this book down and read it in one sitting. Everything from transportation to hotels are talked about. Some stories amusing and some with their own kind of sadness. It gives you good information also about tourist scams to be aware of.If you have ever wanted to go to Thailand or just want to get an insider's view, you should pick up this book. It will help any treaveler avoid some certain pitfalls, but at the same time, show the timeless beauty of this land and its people.
Land of Smile is filled with such rich detail and so many lovely photos. The golden Buddhas that proliferate everywhere are gorgeous to behold. It really was like being there. It shows the day to day life of a foreign traveler in a very "you are there" way. I would love to read more travel books by this author as I love her easy, no nonsense style and her humor as well. I don't like to travel but I'll be more than happy to let this author take me anywhere.

Ten Days in the Land of Smile A Thailand Travelogue eBook Diane Sontag Reviews
The author must be nearly as old as me as I travelled Thailand in the late 80's and she's described the country I remembered but didn't have the skill to write down! The trains, the monks its all there! Before the Internet we really did just arrive in town just as the author and travelling companion does -and hoped to find somewhere to stay! This is an easy read in journal form with some nice photos which even on the in b&w looked cool - slightly retro I thought!
